Micah’s Story - Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) Warrior

A couple of months ago, in January of 2021, Micah’s mom, Kay, took Micah to the doctor after daycare one day. She noticed he’d been having cold-like symptoms for about a week, so she figured since he hadn’t gotten any better, it was time to take him in.

The first doctor noticed a mass in Micah’s stomach, but he told Kay not to worry because it was likely just gas. After being sent to another doctor, she heard something different. Her little two-year-old son had cancer. It took a few days for the doctors to make a diagnosis; they concluded that Micah had stage 7 acute myelogenous leukemia (AML).

What Is Leukemia?

Leukemia is a cancer that develops in the bone marrow, so it effects the developing blood cells.

This kind of cancer is uncommon in babies, which made Micah’s situation a little more complicated. Before Micah could start chemotherapy, the doctors thought he might have a form of Down Syndrome. The confirmation of that diagnosis made it difficult to know exactly which kind of chemotherapy would work.

Unfortunately, that last round of chemo did not help. The cancer has spread to his brain, so now Micah will receive a kind of chemotherapy that is three times stronger than the last. I encourage you all to be praying for Micah during his battle and that the Lord will comfort him and his family!

Exodus 14:14

“The Lord will fight for you, you need only be still.”

At the beginning of all this, Micah enjoyed getting to see the nice nurses and doctors. Now, it is starting to weigh on him. He loves to watch Madagascar, Mickey Mouse, and Baby Shark, so sometimes those can cheer him up.
