Standing Firm (Parent's Devotional)
When we are faced with trials in life, it’s hard to know what to do. What do you do when you hear the words, “Your son/daughter has cancer?” How do you react? Who do you tell? The Bible calls us to “stand firm” throughout the struggles we face, whether that be physically, emotionally, or mentally.
“Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith. Remember that your family of believers all over the world is going through the same kind of suffering you are.”
~ 1 Peter 5:8-9
This verse provides us with the comfort we need to face every challenging day. God has given us a community of believers to turn to when the devil wants to devour us. The devil reveals himself to us through many ways. Cancer is the devil. Alcoholism is the devil. Depression is the devil. Negative thoughts are the devil. The devil wants to take away our joy, but 1 Peter 5:8-9 says to stand firm in our faith, and that joy will be given back to us. When we put our full trust in God, the devil can’t tempt us or hurt us. God is the ultimate fighter, and He will always fight for you, your child, and everyone else you know.
“Be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord.”
~ 1 Corinthians 15:58
I love this verse because it reminds us to always trust in God’s plan. Though we don’t always understand why bad things happen, we do know that God is watching over us. Maybe the trials you are facing right now will strengthen you in ways you cannot yet fathom, or maybe He wants to bring a loved one home earlier than you would like. Regardless of the outcome, God already knows it, and He will be there with us every step of the way. We just need to stand firm in Him.
